Investment Philosophy

InnoCal seeks opportunities with the following characteristics:

  • Exceptional management teams - those that have the knowledge, skills and ambition required to build highly successful companies.
  • Early and expansion stage companies seeking a first or second round of venture financing.
  • Companies with proprietary technology or "know-how" barriers to competitive market entry.
  • Companies which have the potential to dominate a promising market niche.


Strategy

Building a business takes more than money, it requires experienced people with an in-depth understanding of good management practices. Therefore, InnoCal directors serve as active board members of our portfolio companies. We advise management on strategic planning, financing, staffing and marketing. We believe our most valuable contribution is to bring a measured objectivity to the table. Like our portfolio companies, InnoCal partners work as a team, utilizing the knowledge and experience of our collective partnership. We are also patient investors, allowing us to maintain a steady pace of investing in various economic conditions. Finally, by limiting the number of projects we are involved with, we are able to provide the human resources necessary to assist and guide our partner entrepreneurs throughout our relationship.


Geographic Focus

We focus on businesses located in the Western United States, however, we are willing to consider select investment opportunities anywhere in the country and internationally.


Industry Focus

InnoCal is an information technology venture investor. As such we currently focus on:

  • Wireless Technology and Applications
  • Semiconductors and Components
  • Healthcare Information Technology
  • Enterprise Hardware
  • Communications and Broadband Technologies
  • High growth businesses in other viable IT sectors


Investment Structure

Total investment in a given portfolio company may range from $1 million to $5 million, with $3 million as an average initial investment. Typically, we are lead investors, often times leading a syndicate of multiple venture capital or strategic investors. Given our deep and long term relationships in the venture capital business, we can add value by bringing together many investors in a round of financing.
